Nintendo dropped a Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave direct, giving us a wealth of new information about the upcoming game. Possibly the biggest reveal being that there once again will be a five year timeskip in this game. However, unlike Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fortune’s Weave will begin the future that has been devastated by the Demon God, Balor, and the player controlling the avatar, Eshmel, will travel back into the past to change history and recruit the other four main characters: Cai, Leda, Theodora, and Dietrich. Furthermore, unlike Three Houses, the stories of all four characters can be played simultaneously, not requiring multiple playthroughs of the game to see everything. Though it was not elaborated upon, the direct hinted that there would be a way to take on Balor without traveling into the past, akin to fighting Ganon at the beginning of the game in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Additionally, it was shown that Eshmel is a soul summoned by Sothis sent down to save the world. Clips from Twitter also show that Eshmel will be a fully customizable avatar, a first since Corrin in Fire Emblem: Fates.

In addition to story content, the direct showed off the class system. Unit classes will be divided into three tiers: Beginner, Specialty, and Advanced. The Beginner tier includes classes such as Gladiator (likely a mercenary equivalent), Diviner (mage/monk), and Ornius Rider (cavalier). Next, the Specialty tier includes classes such as Armored Knight, Wing Soldier (Pegasus Knight), and Charioteer. Finally, the Advanced tier includes classes such as Cataphract (Great Knight), Guardian (closest equivalent is Basara from FE: Fates), Elephant Rider, Dragoon (Wyvern Lord), Dreadnought (General/Fortress Knight), Warrior, Shido (Swordmaster), Sniper, Forest Knight (Bow Knight), Bardinger (Paladin), Ovate (Sage), and Bishop. It is notable that the Elephant Rider class appears to take up four tiles on the map, a first for player classes in the series. Pro Fire Emblem Focus will be referring to these types of classes as Oversized Classes, unless an official term is coined for them. Certification exams return in Fortune’s Weave. Based on footage from the direct, it appears the minimum threshold percentage change to pass the exam has been lowered to at least 25%, down from 30% in Three Houses.

Another aspect of the game that was shown off was the world map. On the world map the player is free to explore Dagda and fight battles, visit towns, and explore dungeons. Side quests will also be available to complete and earn rewards. Interestingly, dungeon combat appears to have been completely revamped since its revival in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Instead of going into a traditional Fire Emblem grid map during random encounters, you will now engage enemies in a more traditional turn-based RPG format. Also, each main character has a unique skill that can be used on the world map. For instance, Dietrich can spawn enemy encounters on the world map and Theodora can recruit battalions which can be used to accomplish specific tasks or be deployed in battle.

Fortune's Weave finally made an appearance again in the form of a trailer in the latest Nintendo Direct! We have new confirmation that the game will follow four main characters: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Additionally, it appears based on the boxart for the game that our avatar will be named Eshmel. There is still debate as to whether the game is a prequel or a sequel, with evidence of it being a sequel being that the year shown on the UI is later than the years Three Houses takes place in while others believe it is a prequel based on the idea that the years do not follow the same Imperial Calendar seen in Three Houses. It appears that the game will return to using a world map, allowing you to explore different areas of Dagda (and possible return to Fodlan because Enbarr is on the map) and explore real-time dungeons like in Shadows of Valentia. Additionally, it seems you will have a limited number of turns to use to level up and get stronger before needing to advance the story. This is likely here to limit tactics such as boss abuse to gain experience. Many systems from Three Houses will return such as promotion exams and how weapon levels work. While this trailer gave us some good insight on how the game will play, many details are still unknown. Prequel or Sequel? What is the story behind our avatar? Will Edelgard return? Is there a 5th route? We'll find out when Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave releases on 9/17/2026
